April 2010 Club Meeting Newsletter

The April club meeting main program was devoted to the club members built "Art Birdhouses" built for donation to the Artchurch Studio and the benefit of students. Terri Menefee, pictured above, was delighted with the number of Art Birdhouses and build quality. The Art Birdhouses will be put on display in the Hot Springs Artchurch Studio on 5/1 for a month long silent auction and Internet auction. The auction dollars will be matched by another donor and the total dollars will go to benefit students.

Business Meeting

Meeting Kickoff Meeting Kickoff

Meeting was called to order at 7 PM by President, Bill Gruhn. Bill reported the Board of Directors drive to get all club dues paid up by April was a success. The club roster was updated and now has 109 paid members.

Bill brought up that the club is looking for two volunteers. Someone needs to head up the Spring Craft Show. The club has booth (#10) that needs someone to get the thing together and set up manpower to man the booth for the two day event. The show is on May 22nd. Also, someone needs to come forward and head up this years Annual Club Picnic. Without a Picnic Chairman, there can not be a picnic. If you can help out with either of these two projects please call Bill Gruhn (915-8825).

Planned Main Programs Planned Main Programs

Vice President, Lee Smith gave his report on upcoming main programs and you don't want to miss any of them. The May meeting features Mark Walter, who runs a tool and machine store in Oklahoma and sells "Sawstop" table saws. He is coming to the May meeting and bringing a "Sawstop". The Sawstop is the famous safety saw that if your finger or any other part of your body gets to the blade the whole thing stops instantly. It is quite impressive. He'll be bringing along a couple of brakes and we'll be able to see it in action. Mark your calendar for that one. May 12th.

Additional club meeting scheduling & planning can be seen by going to the club's Calendar webpage.

Planned Shop Visits Planned Shop Visits

Wally Duchow has volunteered to restart the Club Shop Visits program. Wally sent around a sign up sheet for people willint to host a visit in their shop. If you are interested in hosting a shop visit, give Wally a call (915-0233).

This years visits will be held at the discretion of the owner as to the day and time he hosts the visit. Some will be held in the evenings. Also the host will establish whether there is a demonstration or not. The first one will be at Lee Smith's shop (118 Castano Drive). Separate E-Mail will be sent for scheduling and directions.

Blind Camp 2010 Project

Noreen Westerbrook spoke at the meeting to thank club members for their past "Blind Camp" project kits that had built plus the ones they are building for the 2010 Blind Camp. This year's Blind Camp project is being lead by Bob DeLoach (922-4557) and implementation questions should be directed to him. 2010 kits are being built by club volunteers. You can see pictures & specifications for building the kit by clicking:  "Pencil Box kits"

Show and Tell

Lee Smith brought in a two seat canoe he built from scratch. Pictures of it are towards the top of this webpage. The canoe is quite impressive to see. Lee did a lot of extra work over and above the plans and added attractive inlays.

Dick Colestock brought in a bookcase he built and used the opportunity to describe a table saw accident he had and the need for safe table saw techniques.

Ray Worthley brought in a small child's desk he made from recycle oak cabinet doors.

Brian Cash brought in one of his beautiful Intarsia projects that creates a 3-D look from different colored & textured woods.

Main Program Art Birdhouses Show & Tell
Terri Menefee, from the HS Artchurch Studio, lead the Art Birdhouses "Show & Tell". Terri invited the builder of each birdhouse to share their stories and inspiration in their building process. Some woodworkers spoke from the audience and others came to the birdhouses display table. Example pictures are provided below of woodworkers describing their projects.
