July 2010 Club Meeting Newsletter

Club president, Bill Gruhn called the meeting to order. No new members this month and just one visitor. Club business items are slow during the summer months and some Board of Directors were on travel so, the board reports were very quick.

                  Show & Tell

Don Buck showed a turned bowl he made where he starts with one 12" x 12" x 1" board. Don sets his bandsaw to a 45 degree angle and makes progressively smaller circle cuts. Correctly done, he glues the angle cut rings together and relatively little time is required on the lathe to get the final bowl shape.

The above myrtle wood plank was the subject of an interesting show & tell story that included a cross country trip in a 21' foot camper, finding the plank for sale in the Pacific northwest, covincing his wife and then transporting the plank on the camper couch for the remainder of the trip. It will be interesting to see what he makes with it after that much effort to bring it home.

                Main Program

Club vice president, Lee Smith introduced Ron Endicott, who retired from Weyerhauser and has worked in forestry for most of his life. Ron had an information packed presentation focused on Arkansas tree species. He had collected and mounted typical leaf patterns to support his discussions on a wide variety of trees. Most members are familar with oak, maple, cherry, walnut and various pines. Each of those woods along with many others, have a number of different species in that category, and not just red or white oak!

Ron also stressed to be careful who you buy your wood from. Make sure it's a reputable dealer, because a lot of them will sell you one thing that looks like what you're asking for but it maybe something else. Ron brought in different wood samples and some of his own work to illustrate his discussions. Example pictures are provided below.
