Richard Herrmann Bookcase Project Report

Lee Smith, Club Project Director spoke to the group about renaming the club bookcase project in memory of Richard Herrmann who started the project. He introduced Bob Porter who gave a synopsis of how the truck team makes up "book cases kits" by sawing to size all needed parts.

Volunteer club members were solicited to take "book cases kits", with an instruction sheet, and assemble the bookcases(s), sand and apply a clear finish. An example bookcase on display is pictured below.

The bookcases along with HSACF grant money books are used to motivate local area students to improve their reading levels. You can see more details by clicking: http://www.villagewoodworkers.org/gpage12.html

George Hagele then spoke of a project that he and Mike Miller did cutting down, and lowering some book cases for the Mountain Pine School.

Next, Bobby Deloach brought up a continuing yearly club project on making items for the Blind Camp. Bob talked to the group about needing volunteers to build wooden box kits for blind kids to assemble.

Jay Chandler gave an update on the toy teams and the progress being made thus far this year.

Show & Tell

Dan Moran showed off a truck bank that he made from scraps of wood in his shop, and a mailbox door he bought thru Rockler. Dick Colestock showed off two cherrywood bowls that he made using a method where the inside, or smaller bowl was carved out of the bigger bowl. Saving a lot of wood chips. Carl showed 2 cypress knees that he applied two different finishes to. Brian Cash showed a beautiful rose shaped jewelry box that he made using small pieces of different kinds of wood all glued together to make a large three dimensional wooden rose on the cover.

Main Program

After the break, Wally introduced our main program speaker, Vernon Driskell, a retired cabinet maker turned wood carver from Conway.

Vernon focused his presentation on bark carving plus displaying and identifying additional wood carvings. He uses only the bark of dead cottonwood trees to make some of the most beautiful carvings.

Vernon's wife also displayed her wood burning art projects. A very, impressive showing from an artistic couple that wowed everyone in the house.
